OBOB - Fair Fiction: World's Fairs in American and European Fiction

@Country Bookshelf

From their beginnings with the London's Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851, world's fairs have excited the imagination of novelists, including Charles Dickens, Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Baudelaire, William Dean Howells, Marietta Holley, E. L. Doctorow, and Erik Larson. This "illustrated" (to use the nineteenth-century term) talk from Dr. Bob Rydell, History Professor and Director of MSU Humanities Institute, Montana State University, will address the intersections of ideology, utopia, and fun.

Robert Rydell is professor of history at Montana State University where he has been teaching for 38 years.  He is the director of the American Studies Program and director of the MSU Humanities Institute.   He is a leading authority on world's fairs. He has written multiple books on the subject, including All the World’s a Fair (1984) and World of Fairs (1993), and served as guest curator for a major exhibition at the National Building Museum on world's fairs of the 1930s.   Over the past two decades he has also written extensively about Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show and co-authored a prize-winning book with Rob Kroes, Buffalo Bill in Bologna.  He has just written Democracy by Degrees:  The 125 Anniversary History of Montana State University, the sequel to In the People’s Interest that he co-authored in 1993 for MSU’s centennial.  He has held the John Adams Chair in American Studies at the University of Amsterdam, served as a fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies, and received the Mary Turpie Prize from the American Studies Association.

This event will be held at the Country Bookshelf located at 28 W. Main Street in downtown Bozeman.
