Here are the Top 5 things we think you should know about the Great American Read, from one of our librarians, Beth:
#1. This is a vote to determine the MOST BELOVED novel of the American people. So – there are kids books, adult books, books from other countries, science fiction, new books, old books... All the books are fiction – that is what they have in common (and the American people love these books). Voting is unrestricted, anyone can vote as often as they like.
#2. A copy of all the books on the GREAT AMERICAN READ list are in the circulating collection, scattered throughout the Adult and Children’s fiction.
#3. An additional copy of all the books in the GREAT AMERICAN READ are on display on the shelf behind the Reference Desk, available for checkout, and filed alphabetically by title. Call number is GREAT AMER READ.
#4. There are lists of the book in the GREAT AMERICAN READ available at Info and the Reference Desk. Ask people to vote, check off what they have read and write reviews of titles they read for the BPL Summer Reading Program. Reviews are welcome!
#5. Online Media: The PBS television series , the GREAT AMERICAN READ is online, free of charge and on Facebook. The votes will be revealed in the Fall on new episodes. At PBS.org, and the GREAT AMERICAN READ Facebook page, there are lots of short videos with scholars talking about individual books in the GREAT AMERICAN READ. There are Facebook groups to join and discuss books. There is a Pinterest page (with GREAT art) and an Instagram page. Twitter hashtag is #GREATREADPBS among others.
